The Other Pleasures of Having Dogs

October 27th, 2007 Posted in poodles

At 2:30 this morning, Dancer needed to pee, badly enough that she was doing her crate-door-rattling gentle nose touches, which is how she wakes me up, having learned that barking is ignored. (Never let a dog out of the crate if it’s barking. Wait for at least 30 seconds of silence.) Anyway, I got my bathrobe on, suited up the two girls (lighted collars! regular collars! leashes!), and out we went.

Into a gorgeous night, chilly and clear, stars brilliant against a dark blue (not black) sky, enormous full moon casting shadows. So bright I didn’t need the flashlight. A little frost on the grass around the ponds. It was beautiful.

After we came back in, I spent a little time goofing off on the computer, and before I went back to bed at 3, I took another look outside–and things had changed. It was so very foggy that you couldn’t see the ponds out the front door or the trees out the back.

And now, this morning, I took the girls out again, into a clear morning, with just a little fog left, pink light on the few clouds, crisp cold air smelling fresh and clean. VERY cold!
