Knitted Neck Warmer

January 20th, 2008 Posted in knitting

My friend Sue asked for the instructions for the neck warmer for the dogs, so here they are:

Do a gauge swatch (see a good knitting book) to determine the number of stitches per inch you get with your wool and your yarn. Calculate the number of stitches x the neck circumference to get the number of stitches you need. Subtract stitches until you get to a number divisible by four. (If you get 58 stitches, you need 56; if you get 73, you need 72, etc.)

Using a 16″ circular needle, cast on that number of stitches using a long-tail cast-on (see a good knitting book). Join, being careful not to twist. Knit 2, purl 2 until the neckwarmer is the desired length (I do 7″ for long-necked standard poodles).

Then, double the number of stitches by knitting into the front and the back of every stitch (again, see that good knitting book).

For about one inch, knit alternate rounds of purl and knit stitch. Cast off, loosely.

Why would one use a neck warmer instead of a coat/sweater? Just thought I would check about the use of it before I took on trying to make one!

The two dogs I made the neck warmers for are in Denver and regularly go camping with their “mom” (whom I call Sue-from-Denver, and who has Dancer’s brother Guy). They have very warm dog jackets so I made them knitted neck warmers to go with the jackets.

I also knitted dog sweaters for my girls; there are posts with instructions for those, too.
