Raw Diet

February 4th, 2008 Posted in poodles

Elly has taken up supplementing her carefully designed diet with whole raw food–specifically field mice. She caught two field mice (voles) last week. It’s not easy, either–it takes her half an hour of vigorous digging–so you know she has to love them.

It is truly disgusting to watch her eat them, too. She pounces, catches the vole, tosses it into the air, catches it in her mouth, crunches it once or twice–you can hear the bones breaking–and then swallows it down. Whole.

The strange thing is that, in a dog that has IBD and some serious food allergies–a couple of chews on a venison bone can cause some serious intestinal side effects–voles seems to be a positive addition to her diet. She is happy, bright-eyed, fast on the agility field, and enthusiastic. Of course, vigorous digging is great exercise and great for her shoulders.
