It takes experience for a dog to understand a rear cross

June 5th, 2008 Posted in training

Elly is 4 1/2 years old and we’ve been training for almost four years now… Dancer is two and we’ve been training for about a year and a half now.

At the Mega-Dogs trial, I ran the same course with both dogs, with the photographer in the same position. This is a rear cross with Elly:

Note that Elly is turning with me. Note as well how much closer I am to the jump than in the next picture, which is Dancer:

Dancer is not turning–in fact she is looking straight ahead. I am farther back; Dancer is hard to keep up with! Despite the loopy path she ran–she turned after she landed, she managed to run the course at 4.5 yards/second; Elly was considerably slower–just over 4 yps.

However, Dancer has an intensity and drive that Elly does not, as you can see in this picture:

It will take some time, as well, for Dancer to learn that she need not clear every jump by three or four miles.
