Are poodles unusually smart?

July 12th, 2009 Posted in life with poodles

Lately I seem to have run into a lot of people who have heard that poodles are the smartest dogs. Most of them seem to be accompanied by beagles or labs and I’d like to think they’re slightly envious. However… I always reply that smart dogs aren’t always easy. They think for themselves.

Today I gave both girls nice beef bones to chew on. They immediately chewed them down to just bone and continued to gnaw on them. (Keeps their teeth clean!) I did some chores, and noticed that Elly had somehow managed to end up with both bones, one under her paw and one she was actively chewing on. Just as I was deciding whether to do something about it, Dancer leapt up and ran over to the back door, barking loudly. “There’s someone out there!” Elly ran over to the door to check it out. Dancer turned and sprinted to the two bones Elly had left, grabbed the bigger bone, and took it to her rug, where she settled down to finish it off.
